1 dead after fire at Jonesboro apartment complex

JONESBORO, Ark. (AP) - Authorities say one person is dead after a fire at a Jonesboro apartment complex that houses disabled and elderly residents.

The fire broke out Tuesday at the Aspen Garden Apartments. Authorities say one person was found dead and several others were taken to a hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

Fire Chief Kevin Miller says the complex houses about 40 to 50 residents, and some had to be evacuated from second- and third-floor balconies with ladders.

Firefighters and police are still investigating the cause of the blaze, but Jonesboro Fire Department Capt. Eric Simmons says the fire apparently began in a second-floor apartment.

Dozens of residents were displaced in the fire, and the Northeast Arkansas chapter of the American Red Cross has set up an emergency shelter.
