Child killed in car-train collision

Police say a child is dead and three people are injured after a car and a train collided Thursday morning.

The accident occurred around 8:15 a.m. in Sweet Home at Highway 365 and Harper Road.

The sheriff's office says the Chrysler 300 was crossing the railroad tracks when it was struck by a Union Pacific train.

The impact of the collision caused the car to be thrown up to 700 yards away.

Emergency crews had to cut off the roof of the car to rescue the occupants.

Police have confirmed that a child who was a passenger in the car was killed in the accident. The driver and two other passengers have been taken to the hospital. There is no word on their conditions.

Names and ages of the victims have not yet been released.

There are no railroad crossing arms at the intersection of Harper and Highway 365, but there are properly functioning warning lights and bells.
