1 of 7 cyclists injured outside McCrory dies

McCRORY (KATV) - One of the seven cyclists injured Tuesday outside of McCrory has died.

Merritt Levitan, 18, of Milton, Mass., passed away at a Memphis hospital, according to the Overland Summer Program - the Massachusetts-based summer camp the cyclists were part of.

Witnesses said a man in his 20s who seemed to be distracted plowed into the group of cyclists in the northbound lanes of Highway 17. The 13 cyclists were on a cross country trip from Charleston, S.C., to Santa Monica, Calif., as part of a six-week trip.

As of Thursday afternoon, the director of the camp said two cyclists were still in the hospital but listed in stable condition.

The driver has since been identified as 21-year-old Teagan Ross Martin of Newport. Martin has not been charged with any crime. According to an Arkansas State Police news release, if Martin is charged at all, it likely won't be until next week.
