22 people in Arkansas indicted after drug bust
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Federal prosecutors say they've indicted 22 people on suspicion of trafficking methamphetamine throughout Arkansas.
The U.S. attorney's office calls the investigation "Operation Meilke Way" after 38-year-old Michael Meilke of Bradford. Meilke faces multiple charges of possessing methamphetamine with the intent to deliver.
Meilke, who was indicted in August, has pleaded not guilty, according to court documents unsealed Tuesday. His jury trial is set for Sept. 24.
Prosecutors say 17 of the 22 people indicted are in police custody after arrest warrants were executed Tuesday. Prosecutors claim the methamphetamine was brought to Arkansas from Mexico and that the drug trafficking occurred in homes with children present and close to elementary schools.
In all, police seized 13.3 pounds of methamphetamine, seven vehicles and more than $163,000 in cash.Copyright 2012 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.
