3 men indicted in Arkansas State player's killing
JACKSON, Tenn. (AP) - A grand jury has indicted three men in the fatal shooting of 21-year-old Arkansas State football player Markel Owens.
Jackson police say Johnny Wade, Derrick Wade and Craig Taylor were indicted Monday on charges of robbery and first-degree murder in the deaths of Owens and 36-year-old Johnny Shivers, the junior defensive lineman's stepfather. They also are charged with attempted murder in the shooting of Owens' mother, Chermaine Owens-Shivers.
Authorities say the Wades, who are cousins, forced their way into a Jackson apartment on Jan. 15 and demanded money. Police say Owens and Shivers were fatally shot during a struggle.
Owens' mother also was shot. The robbers fled with a large amount of cash.
Police said Taylor drove the Wades away from the scene. All three men are in custody.Copyright 2014 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.
