A "wicked" ride: behind the scenes of Wicked
LITTLE ROCK (KATV) - You are likely familiar with the Wizard of Oz but have you ever stopped to think about how the witches, good and bad, became the way they are?
The authors of the hit Broadway musical called Wicked sure did. And the award-winning musical is now on stage at Robinson Center Music Hall in Little Rock.
"I'm originally from Kansas. Grew up, born and raised in Kansas so the Wizard of Oz is very close to my heart," said Hayley Podschun, Galinda/Glinda in the touring production of Wicked.
A longtime Broadway performer, Hayley had always dreamed of playing the good witch referred to as Glinda and Galinda in the show Wicked.
"Wicked's been on my radar for ten years when I first saw it with the original company on Broadway and I'm so happy to be performing Glinda 8 times a week across the country," said Podschun.
That's including a two-week run here in central Arkansas.
"I've never been to Little Rock so this is very exciting for me. It's gorgeous. There's a lot more things to do than I thought," said Podschun. "I've seen the river walk which I really like."
Wicked is the untold story of the witches of Oz... their friendship and how they came to be who they are now... one good and one evil.
The show has won 35 major awards including a Grammy and three Tony awards.
"It's a lot of shoes to fill. You've got a lot of girls in the past who are people that I look up to and the show itself is so popular and it's a phenomenon for a reason because it's so wonderful so it's a lot of good pressure and I'm happy to continue to the tradition of Wicked," said Podschun.
And news anchor Christina Munoz may be a long way from enchanting powers and floating bubbles for transportation but for a few moments she got to experience the magic of theater by going for a ride in the high-flying contraption used for Glinda in the show.
"We get to make people happy maybe after a long stressful day at work. And it just so happens that our work is that work that makes people happy," said Podschun. "So that's really nice."
