Additional signatures submitted for wage hike item

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - A group proposing to gradually raise Arkansas' minimum wage has submitted additional signatures in its effort to put the increase before voters in November.

Give Arkansas a Raise Now on Monday submitted 69,070 signatures to the secretary of state's office to place the proposed initiated act on the ballot. Monday was the deadline for the group to submit additional signatures for the measure.

The group last month had fallen 15,107 signatures shy of the 62,507 needed from registered voters to put its proposed initiated act on the ballot, and had been given 30 extra days to circulate petitions. The proposal calls for raising minimum wage from $6.25 an hour to $8.50 an hour by 2017.

The secretary of state's office has 30 days to review the petitions.
