Apartment fire investigated as homicide

LITTLE ROCK (KATV)--Authorities continue to investigate an afternoon fire that left one person dead.

Little Rock Fire and Police crews were called to the South Oaks Apartment complex on Fair Park Boulevard around 4 p.m.

It was there they say they found a woman dead inside an apartment that caught fire.

When crews arrived, they say flames were shooting out the window and front door of the apartment building.

Still no word on what caused the fire, but until foul play can be ruled out, Little Rock Police are investigating this woman's death as a homicide.

"I was shocked, didn't know what to dodidn't know if anybody had called police, so I went in there and called 911," said neighbor and witness Talajewon Turner.

Turner said he first smelled smoke, went outside and saw fire coming out of the building. He said, within minutes LRFD and LRPD were on scene.

"The fire vented through the window downstairs and involved two other apartments, it was mainly exterior damage, it did get in through the windows and cause smoke damage, but minimal fire damage to the other apartments," said LRFD Captain Jason Weaver.

The apartment that sustained the most damage was on the first floor, where crews believe the fire started. It was also on the first floor apartment where they found a dead woman.

"Little Rock Police Department with it being an un-witnessed fatality, they'll come out and rule out any foul play so they treat it as a crime scene; they'll go in collect evidence and take pictures," added Weaver.

The fire victim's name is not being released at this time. Two other people did get out safely.
