LITTLE ROCK (AP) - A state Senate committee has advanced legislation that would ban members of the state's Highway or Game and Fish commissions from running for elected office in Arkansas during their term as a commissioner.
The Senate State Agencies and Governmental Affairs Committee on Thursday endorsed the proposal by Democratic Sen. David Burnett of Osceola that would prohibit the gubernatorial appointees from seeking office during their term.
Burnett said his proposal was not aimed at any particular members of either commission. State Highway Commissioner John Burkhalter has said he's considering running for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination next year.
Burnett's bill now goes to the Senate for a vote.Copyright 2013 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.
