LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Arkansas House members are preparing for a new vote on next year's speaker after Republicans won control of the Legislature for the first time since Reconstruction.
House Speaker Robert Moore said Friday he would hold a House-wide meeting next week once at least 50 incoming members call for a new election. The House earlier this year elected Democratic Rep. Darrin Williams as the speaker designate, but Republicans want to elect Rep. Terry Rice the next speaker instead.
The incoming 51 Republicans are expected to request a new speaker election Friday. Moore said he's already received a similar request from 25 Democrats.
Republicans hold 51 seats in next year's House after Tuesday's election, but Democrats are eyeing a recount in northeast Arkansas that could deny the GOP an outright majority.Copyright 2012 The Associated Press.
