LITTLE ROCK (AP) - In addition to changing lanes while approaching police cars, firetrucks and ambulances, Arkansas motorists will have to slow down or try to go around tow trucks and utility company vehicles.
Legislators this year said motorists must exercise caution around vehicles with blue, red, yellow, white or green lights. The law takes effect Friday.
Highway Department Director Scott Bennett said his agency wanted to extend the law for highway workers but that it started hearing from utility companies and tow truck operators.
When possible, drivers will have to move into the farthest possible lane. Drivers must slow down if changing lanes isn't possible.
Violators can be fined up to $500 or sent to jail for 90 days. Community service or license suspensions can also be ordered.Copyright 2013 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.
