Arkansas fails vocabulary test
(KATV) - Arkansas scored lower than the nation in a recent government study of students' understanding of word meaning.
The study, performed by the National Center for Education Statistics, required students to integrate their knowledge of individual words with the way words were used in passages of writing. Students were measured in 4th, 8th and 12th grades in 2009 and 2011.
Arkansas students scored lower than the national average at all three grade levels. The study also found that there was no gender gap among Arkansas 4th graders, but girls did perform better than boys by the time they reached 8th grade.
