Arkansas girl featured on ABC's 20/20

It's been a little more than a year since Kali Hardig was admitted to Arkansas Children's Hospital for what would be the fight of her life.

The now 13-year-old Benton girl was diagnosed in July 2013 with primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAM), caused by a brain-eating amoeba. The condition is usually fatal. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Kali is only the third known survivor in the U.S.

Kali was infected with the brain-eating amoeba after swimming at Willow Springs, a local water park that was shut down after the incident, but later reopened for fishing purposes only.

ABC's 20/20 features Kali in their special report "Surviving the Summer: What's in the Water", airing Friday at 9 p.m. on KATV Channel 7.
