(KATV, Source: Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department) - Officers from the Arkansas Highway Police (AHP) Division of the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department (AHTD) have uncovered a significant shipment of illegal drugs in a commercial motor vehicle along Interstate 40, according to AHP Chief Ron Burks.
While conducting a vehicle safety inspection of a tractor-trailer Thursday afternoon, September 8, 2011, at the Alma Highway Police Station in Crawford County, officers discovered approximately 5 1/2 pounds of methamphetamine with an estimated value of $250,000 and approximately 7 1/2 pounds of heroin with an estimated value of $1,000,000. The drugs were discovered in the cab of the truck tractor.
The driver was identified as Jesus A. Lopez, 42, of Tijuana, Mexico. The truck was reportedly traveling from California to Georgia with a cargo of auto parts. Lopez was arrested for possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver and is being held at the Crawford County Detention Center. He was to have appeared in court this morning for a bond hearing.
