Astin Picked In Third Round By Brewers

Juniorright-handed pitcher Barrett Astin was selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the third round of the 2013 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Friday. Astin, who was the 90th overall pick, is the third Arkansas player to be selectedin the 2013 MLB Draft. Ryne Stanek was picked in the first round with the 29th overall pick by the Tampa Bay Rays, while Colby Suggs was selected in the second round with the 73rd overall pick by the Miami Marlins. Hailing from Forrest City, Ark., Astin pitched in 18 games, including 14 starts,during his junior season and finished the year with a 4-4 record, one save and a 1.79 ERA, which ranks as the ninth-lowest ERA in a season in school history. Astin finished the season ranked fifth in the SEC in ERA and 14thin innings pitched (90.2). In conference games only, Astin compiled a 3-3 record with a 2.14 ERA in 10 appearances, including nine starts. Astin was eighth in the SEC in ERA in conference games only and 11thwith 51 strikeouts against league opponents. Astin has pitched in 77 games, including 20 as a starter, during his collegiatecareer and has a 12-11 record with 15 saves and a 2.11 ERA. Astin currently ranks third in school history in career ERA, tied for second in career saves and fifth in career appearances. In 209 innings, Astin has allowed 70 runs, 49 earned, on 188 hits and struckout 192 batters. In addition to Astin getting drafted on Friday, Arkansas signee Jon Denney fromYukon, Okla., was picked in the third round by the Boston Red Sox with the 81st overall pick.
