Billboard honors officers killed in rescue attempt
WALDRON, Ark. (AP) - A county sheriff and a wildlife officer who died trying to rescue two women from a flooding creek are being honored as heroes on a billboard in Waldron.
Scott County Sheriff Cody Carpenter and Arkansas Game and Fish Commission Officer Joel Campora died May 31 while trying rescued Regina Shearn and Vivian Reimer from their home in Y City.
The two officers reached the home by boat - but they and the two women were killed when floodwaters from Mill Creek collapsed the women's house.
The billboard unveiled Friday is U.S. 71B south of Waldron's downtown and faces toward Y City.
It includes photos of the two men with the words "In honor of our heroes" and pictures of their badges with black tape across the faces of the badges.
