Body found in Miss. River ID'd as missing captain

HELENA-WEST HELENA (AP) - Authorities in Phillips County say a body found earlier this month in the Mississippi River belongs to a 60-year-old barge captain who fell overboard in January.

The Phillips County Sheriff's Office says Vernon Bumgarner of Houma, La., was identified through dental records.

A commercial fisherman and his son found a body in the Mississippi River on March 12 as they were setting out nets. There was no identification on the body.

Bumgarner was tugboat captain for Caillou Island Towing. He fell from a barge into the river near DeSoto County, Miss., on Jan. 17. The Coast Guard used helicopters and boats in its search for Bumgarner but called off their search a day after his disappearance.
