Broadway Bridge to be branded "America's Bridge"

(KATV) Little Rock - The new Broadway Bridge is getting a new name. Wednesday, the Highway Commission approved a plan to change the name to "America's Bridge".

Pulaski County Judge Buddy Villines says the Broadway Bridge was dedicated to World War I veterans when it opened in 1923 and he wants it to continue to honor veterans.

A color for the bridge has not been picked. The proposal to paint the bridge red, white and blue proved to be too expensive to maintain.

The bridge connecting Little Rock and North Little Rock will have flags as well as a walking and bicycle path that includes a "walk of honor" dedicated to veterans.

The bridge will have LED lights at night. Roughly an extra 1.5 million dollar cost. The commission's approval does not include funding for the patriotic plans. Judge Villines says money will be raised privately to pay for the changes and he will open an account for "America's Bridge" to accept tax-deductible contributions.

The contract for the project is expected to be decided next year. Construction could take up to two years.
