Bryant School District fighting AAA conference assignment

BRYANT (KATV) - The Bryant School District is pursuing legal action against the Arkansas Activities Association because the district does not agree with the athletic conference they will be moved to next year.

Bryant is currently in the 6A/7A South and will be reassigned to the 6A/7A Central conference next year. Bryant says the move would double their travel time and expenses.

Jan and Tony Hladik moved to Arkansas to watch their grandson play football at Bryant. Next year they are concerned they won't be able to travel to away games.

"With the conference the way it has been, we got Hot Springs easily, we got to Pine Bluff very easily, so makes it very convenient, but this new alignment isn't going to be convenient for anyone," Jan Hladik said.

In their current conference, Bryant travels 392.9 total miles one way. The move to the conference would put their miles at 855.6 miles.

Instead of games close to home, they'll now to Alma and Greenwood, both 156 miles away, as well as Van Buren, which is 164 miles away and Siloam Springs, which is 229 miles away.

Athletic director Mike Lee worries that added costs of travel will mean there will be to be cuts in the programs.

"Extra travel is going to take away from expenditures we could use to help make our programs better," Lee said.
