Bull Shoals police chief submits resignation

BULL SHOALS, Ark. (AP) - The Bull Shoals mayor says embattled police chief Daniel Sutterfield has submitted his resignation letter.

Mayor Bruce Powell told the Baxter Bulletin ( ) Wednesday that Sutterfield's last day will be Aug. 14. Powell says Sutterfield remains on workers' compensation.

Sutterfield made a deal with federal prosecutors Monday to resign and never serve in law enforcement again in exchange for dropped charges. He was charged with use of excessive force stemming from a July 2013 arrest. He had faced up to 10 years in prison.

Sutterfield also agreed to relinquish his Arkansas law enforcement certification.

The prosecutors can initiate the criminal case against Sutterfield if the conditions of the agreement aren't met.
