Chrysler recalls 2.7M jeeps

(CNN) - Under pressure from the US government, Chrysler group agreed Tuesday to recall 2.7 million jeeps.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) had given the automaker until Tuesday to comply.

Certain Jeep models were recalled because of the risk of fuel leaks and fires in rear-end crashes. They are:

  • 2002-2007 Jeep Liberty
  • 1993-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Authorities said at least 51 people have died from fiery crashes caused by these defaults. Chrysler had previously argued the vehicles were safe.

In a statement, the automaker said, "Chrysler Group regards safety as a paramount concern and does not compromise on the safety of our customers and their families."
