Conway PD: Toddler drowns in pool
CONWAY (KATV) - A toddler died Friday after drowning in a swimming pool.
A 22-month-old and a 3-year-old made it to the pool at Westbury Park apartments without an adult. Behind the tall white fence, an elderly maintenance man at Westbury Park apartments noticed someone struggling in the pool and screamed for help. The manager jumped in the pool and found the two toddlers.
Latresha Woodruff with the Conway Police Department said, "The 3-year-old male was shaken up and seemed to be ok but the 2-year-old was struggling. The manager performed CPR on the child and the ambulance came and took over. The child, Christopher Stewart, was taken to the hospital where he later died."
Channel 7 News was not allowed on the property but our crew could see an iron fence around the pool, in addition to the wood fence. "But obviously these children were able to get into the gate. So I'm not sure if it was secure," Woodruff added.
Mekayla Mitchell, the woman who was supposed to be watching the children, told police she fell asleep.
Woodruff explained, "The 22-month-old, Christopher Stewart, is actually not Mitchell's child. She was watching him. He is her boyfriend's son. The 3-year-old is Mekayla Mitchell's son. She was watching the two children"
Woodruff added, "This investigation will be on going until our detectives feel satisfied that they found all the answers."
Mekayla Mitchell is 26 years old. Her boyfriend's son Christopher Stewart would have turned 2 in October. Mitchell has been question but not arrested. Investigators are working to determine if this was a terrible tragedy or negligence.
Two toddlers were found alone in a swimming pool at a Conway apartment complex. One of them drowned. Mekayla Mitchell was caring for the children when it happened. She told police she fell asleep and didn't realize the children left the apartment.
Latresha Woodruff with the Conway Police Department says police received a call at 11:00 Friday morning to Westbury Park Apartments on Nutter Chapel Road. A witness saw the children in the pool and called for help. The apartment manager pulled both of them from the pool, and tried performing CPR on 22-month-old Christopher Stewart. He later died in the hospital. The 3-year-old is okay.
Mitchell is the mother of the 3-year-old. Stewart was her boyfriend's son. Police continue to investigate.
