FAYETTEVILLE - Colin Poché, Brandon Moore and Barrett Astin combined on a six-hit shutout as No. 19 Arkansas opened its series against San Diego State with a 2-0 win on Thursday night at Baum Stadium.
Arkansas snaps its four-game losing streak and improves to 8-5 on the season, while San Diego State drops to 7-6 with the loss.
The Razorback pitching staff was the story of the night with Poché, Moore and Astin combining for the Razorbacks' third shutout of the season. Poché (2-0) earned the win, striking out two and giving up just three hits in four shutout innings. Moore came out of the bullpen and struck out one in three scoreless frames. Astin pitched the final two innings to earn his first save of the season. Astin's save was the 15th of his career, moving him into a tie for second on the UA career saves list with Bill Bakewell.
San Diego State starter Michael Cederoth (1-2) tossed a complete game, but took the loss. Cederoth gave up two runs on three hits and struck out seven in eight innings.
Brian Anderson, Jacob Mahan and Tyler Spoon each had a hit for Arkansas. Anderson drove in a RBI, while Mahan and Brett McAfee each scored a run. Spoon extended his hitting streak to 13 games with his first inning single.
Greg Allen, Avondre Bollar, Brad Haynal, Jake Romanski, Danny Sheehan and John Spirk each had one hit to account for the Aztecs' six hits.
Arkansas scored the only two runs of the ball game in the bottom of the third. McAfee drew a leadoff walk and then stole second. A base hit to center field by Mahan advanced McAfee to third. After the next two batters were retired on strikeouts, Cederoth delivered a pitch in the dirt to Anderson. Mahan advanced to second on the wild pitch. On the throw down to second by the SDSU catcher, McAfee broke for home and was able to slide in ahead of the tag to score the game's first run. Anderson then followed with a double to the gap in right-center field to score Mahan from second base and put the Razorbacks in front 2-0.
San Diego State had chances to score in the game, but the Razorbacks used a season-high four double plays to keep the Aztecs off the scoreboard. In the second, San Diego State had runners on first and second with one out, but flew into a 9-3 double play to end that scoring opportunity. SDSU had the bases loaded with one out in the fourth, but Poché induced a 6-4-3 double play to end the threat. The Aztecs grounded into a twin killing in the sixth and Astin got a 3-6 double play to end the ninth and give Arkansas the win.
The series resumes on Friday with first pitch set for 3:05 p.m. Arkansas will start junior right hander Ryne Stanek (1-1, 2.84), while San Diego State will start junior righty Philip Walby (1-1, 1.12).
