DWI crash seriously injures one person
(KATV)- A man is in jail after police say he was driving while intoxicated, and allegedly caused a serious car crash. The driver, Taron Bell, 31, walked away with non-life threatening injuries.
He is being charged with DWI, reckless driving, no drivers license and first degree battery. In the arrest report, the officer reported that Bell "had a strong odor of intoxicants on his breath."
"He did smell intoxicants on the person, but again if he refuses to take the test, we're not able to do a breathalyzer on him," said Lt. Sidney Allen of the Little Rock Police Department.
The crash happened at Asher and Leeds streets Tuesday night at 9:45 p.m.
According to police, Bell was driving eastbound on Asher, crossed the double yellow lines and struck and oncoming car head on in the other lane. That car was driven by Ahmad Waheed, 32, who had to be extracted from the car.
"Mr. Waheed was transported to the hospital with very serious injuries. Right now he's still in the hospital being medically treated and his passenger also received injuries but her injuries were not as serious," Allen said.
The LRPD says they too often see lives changed because someone drinks and drives.
"You have to live those results of someone else being permanently injured or possibly even dead," Allen said.
Bell is scheduled to appear in court next Tuesday.
