MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - A gang member convicted of working as an enforcer for a violent Memphis-based drug ring with ties to Mexican cartels has been sentenced to life in prison.

Clinton Lewis was sentenced Tuesday in Memphis federal court by U.S. District Judge Samuel H. Mays. Lewis and his cousin, Martin Lewis, were convicted in March 2012 of being members of the drug organization led by Craig Petties.

Several former gang members testified at trial that the Lewises provided muscle for the organization, which imported cocaine from Mexico and sold it in Tennessee, Texas, Arkansas, Mississippi, Georgia and North Carolina. About 40 members of the ring, including Petties, have been convicted or pleaded guilty to being members of the drug ring from 1995 to 2008.

Martin Lewis' sentencing is scheduled for June 14.
