Family speaks after son was shot by deputy
PINE BLUFF (KATV) — Dedric Jones, 36, is in critical condition in the ICU at the Jefferson Regional Medical Center after being shot by a deputy early Saturday morning. The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office has yet to release the name of the deputy criminal investigator who shot Jones in the chest outside Swan's Bar and Lounge in Pine Bluff. Lafayette Woods Jr. of the sheriff's office says because the deputy is a criminal investigator and it's part of their due process, they can't release the deputy's name. Dedric's family says they know exactly who did it. "Dedric is confused about the whole situation," said Dedric's mother Gail Lang. "This was an attempt to kill him." Lang said the motive behind the shooting was about a girl one of Dedric's friends was seeing. The family says that led the deputy to shoot Dedric, thinking it was his friend. The Lang family says the sheriff's office hasn't said anything to them since Dedric has been in the hospital. "I just want justice to be done," said Leon Carroll, Dedric's uncle. Carroll works at a barber shop across the street from the club where his nephew was shot. He says he was told by those who were at the club that the deputy was picking up the bullet casings after the shooting. The sheriff's office is still investigating to see if the deputy was on or off duty when the shooting took place. Lang says her son never carried a gun. "It makes me angry," said Lang. "These people are expected to protect us and not shoot us down." The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office is still investigating the shooting.
