Forestry panel warns of Arkansas wildfire danger
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - The Arkansas Forestry Commission is asking property owners to take precautions to help prevent wildfires.
Officials have classified the state as being moderate a moderate risk of wildfires.
The agency says that with milder weather, many residents will be inclined to burn trash or debris. High winds that came in with cold front this week have increased the risk level for wildfires.
Winds above 10 mph and humidity levels below 30 percent make it easier for a fire to spread out of control.
Anyone burning should have tools, such as rakes and shovels, and adequate water on hand to ensure a fire doesn't spread.
The commission says there were twice as many wildfires in January and February this year over last year.Copyright 2014 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.
