Fort Smith man charged in infant son's death
FORT SMITH (AP) - A Fort Smith man has been charged with felony battery of his 2-month-old son - who has since died as a result of his injuries.
Fort Smith police said Thursday that 2-month-old Benjamin Schutz died Wednesday night at a Little Rock hospital. Police say the charge may be upgraded depending on the results of an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
Police arrested 27-year-old Matthew Schutz earlier Wednesday on the battery charge after doctors who treated Benjamin said he appeared to suffer what is commonly called "shaken baby syndrome."
Schutz has pleaded not guilty. He told authorities he dropped the child on his head while placing him on a changing table March 10.
Police say the infant's mother was not at home at the time of the incident.Copyright 2013 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.
