Fort Smith man sentenced to prison for slaying

FORT SMITH (AP) - A Fort Smith man has been sentenced to 30 years in prison after pleading guilty to killing his girlfriend's brother and wounding the woman's other brother.

The Times Record reports that 38-year-old Frederick Newton was sentenced Wednesday after pleading guilty to second-degree murder, first-degree battery and being a felon in possession of a firearm. The murder charge was reduced from first-degree murder as part of a plea agreement.

Prosecutors say Newton shot and killed 27-year-old Cecil Dotson III and wounded 21-year-old Rafael Dotson in May 2012 after arguing and fighting with the two men over comments Newton had made about the two men's sister - who was Newton's girlfriend.

Sebastian County Chief Deputy Prosecutor Linda Ward says the victim's family approved the plea agreement.
