FORT SMITH, Ark. (AP) - Fort Smith police are investigating three incidents in which elderly residents were taken in by alleged false promises from a man claiming to be a roofer.
Police said Tuesday that in each instance, elderly homeowners were approached by a man and told that a warranty inspection was needed on the roof of their home.
Police say the man convinced the homeowners that they had to pay to repair leaks around vents on the roof, which the victims were told carried additional supply costs.
Police say they're treating the events as felony theft by deception. There are one or more male suspects who are white and between 35- and 45-years-old and driving a white pickup truck.
Investigators say elderly residents should be cautious of strangers offering unsolicited home inspections or repairs.Copyright 2013 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.
