Free breakfast and lunch served to hundreds of Bryant School students

Up to 1,000 kids a day won't go hungry in the Bryant area during the next few months. In partnership with the Department of Human Services and the Bryant School District Food Services; kids are getting free breakfast and lunches while they're out on summer break.

More than 17,000 meals were provided in just 40 days last year, but this year they anticipate to double and even triple that number to help children in the area get the nutrition they need while not in school.

Summer break is here for students K-12, which means school lunches have come to a halt. However, here in the Bryant School District, making sure no kids go hungry is a top priority.

"At this time of the year, a lot of our kids don't have access to extra meals and the family is very limited with the meals they receive in the summer time and this is a way stepping up as a community," said Bryant School District Food Service Director, Gay Sellers.

Fruits, veggies, sandwiches, milk and a treat like ice cream and chips are included in the lunch provided. At the Bryant Boys and Girls Club, at least 300 kids per day will get fed through the summer months, combined with the other sites at least 1,000 will get breakfast and lunch Monday through Friday.

"It's a smile on a kids face, it means kids that we have that we feed through our school year that we see come back to school in the fall that hasn't lost weight or the needs haven't been met through the summer," added Sellers.

38 percent of students in Bryant Schools receive free or reduced lunches during the school year. The summer feeding program meals are funded through a partnership with DHS.
