A community mourns the death of a teenager killed in a car wreck early Wednesday morning.
17-year-old Drew Melton of Benton was laid to rest Saturday. It is a tragedy that brought together hundreds of people of all ages to say goodbye to Melton.
The 17-year old was riding with four friends on Northlake Rd. earlier this week when the driver lost control and the car hit a tree. Saturday her family and friends gathered and remembered the teen who was heavily involved in school sports. She played golf, softball and basketball and had hopes of joining the swim team. Melton, who was a senior at Benton High School planned on attending University of Arkansas Fayetteville in the fall. But along with sports and school, Melton had plenty of friends to keep her busy.
"We were best friends the day I met her. And she just, she lights up the room when she walks in," said Laic Stewart, a friend of Elton's. "I don't know how to cope with it. It doesn't seem like it was supposed to happen but I know it's in God's plans and he has a bright future for us all and regardless if she's here, she's always going to be here. I know she's standing right beside me right now," said Stewart.
The funeral was held at First Baptist Church in Benton. Drew was so well known and loved in the community that the ushers there told Channel 7 that they ran out of programs even before everybody got there.
