MIA Hampton mayor resigns
HAMPTON (KATV) - The Mayor of Hampton put his resignation in the county newspaper. Mayor Phillip Swofford allegedly never gave the letter to City Hall.
He allegedly hadn't showed up to work in weeks and Jeff Jackson, the police chief and the treasurer had to run the city while he was gone.
According to Jackson, the mayor was able to get paid for all the weeks he didn't work because he didn't formally resign. Both Jackson and the treasure plan to continue doing the Mayor's job. Unless there is an emergency meeting, the next scheduled city council meeting is November 12th.
You may remember the mayor fired Jackson a few hours after Jackson told him he would not serve eviction notices that the mayor admits to manipulating.
