Hartford treasurer accused of theft by deception

FORT SMITH, Ark. (AP) - A preliminary hearing is scheduled June 18 for Hartford's elected recorder-treasurer after she was accused of giving herself a raise without the City Council's approval.

The Southwest Times-Record reports that 58-year-old Janice Keller was arrested on May 6 on suspicion of felony theft by deception and released from the Sebastian County Adult Detention Center on a $5,000 signature bond.

An arrest warrant affidavit alleges Keller fraudulently obtained an amount greater than $1,000 but less than $5,000 sometime between January and December last year.

Keller is accused of giving herself a $1,500 weekly raise that was not approved by the Hartford City Council. The affidavit says the council did not discuss a raise for Keller during its January 2013 budget meeting.

Keller has served as the city's recorder-treasurer since 2005.
