Hill comes under fire in GOP debate over donations

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - French Hill is coming under fire from his two rivals for the GOP nomination for a central Arkansas congressional seat over his donation to former state Treasurer Martha Shoffner and his support of a local sales tax measure.

Ann Clemmer and Conrad Reynolds targeted Hill repeatedly Saturday in a debate held by the Arkansas Federation of Young Republicans. The three are seeking the GOP nomination for the 2nd Congressional District.

Clemmer criticized Hill for giving money to Shoffner's 2010 re-election bid. Shoffner, a Democrat, stepped down last year and was convicted last month on 14 bribery and extortion counts. Reynolds also criticized Hill for advocating a sales tax increase in Little Rock in 2011.

Hill defended himself, saying he has a long record of supporting Republicans and backing tax cuts.
