The media in the Southeastern Conference has picked the 2012-13 Razorback men's basketball team to finish fifth in their annual preseason poll which was released by the league office in Birmingham, Ala., on Monday. Sophomore BJ Young and junior Marshawn Powell were named to the media's preseason first- and second-All-SEC teams, respectively.
Arkansas tallied 226 points in the media poll which included local media from each of the 14 SEC schools as well as national media members. Defending national champion, Kentucky, was picked to win the league and earned 17 first-place votes on way to a point total of 328. Florida was picked second with five first-place votes and 310 points with Missouri (286) and Tennessee (269) rounding out the four teams ahead of Arkansas.
The remainder of the media poll went as follows, Alabama (222), Ole Miss (186), Georgia (149), Texas A&M (122), Vanderbilt (120), LSU (116), Auburn (95), South Carolina (54 and Mississippi State (37).
Individually, Young was named to a preseason team for the first time in his career when he was one of five players included in the elite first-team. The St. Louis, Mo., native led all freshmen in the SEC in scoring a year ago when he averaged 15.3 points per game. He scored a career high 31 against No. 14 Florida at Bud Walton Arena and was a second-team All-SEC and All-SEC Freshman team member following the 2011-12 season.
Powell was named to his second preseason All-SEC squad after a nod as a sophomore in 2010-11. The 6-7 forward missed all but two games of the 2011-12 season after a knee injury sidelined him. The elder statesman of the Razorback roster was averaging 19.5 points and 6.0 rebounds per game prior to the injury. As a freshman in 2009-10, Powell averaged 14.9 points and 6.7 rebounds and was the only non-Kentucky player to earn unanimous selection to the All-SEC freshman team.
