UPDATE: Illness growing in Arkansas prison

TUCKER (KATV) - The Arkansas Department of Correction said the number of inmates suffering from an illness has grown by about 100 overnight.

Currently officials at the Tucker Unit believe around 350 inmates are suffering from a very contagious illness.

Officials are still trying to pinpoint what is causing the outbreak.

"We should know more in the coming days," said spokeswoman Shea Wilson. "The Arkansas Department of Health will be interviewing inmates Tuesday regarding their conditions."

Wilson added inmates were isolated in the prison's gym Sunday because of symptoms that pointed to a mass illness.

"We've shut down any transfers of inmates to other prisons at this time to limit the spread of whatever this is," she added.

Regarding outside people entering the prison, visitation was closed Sunday in case the illness is contagious.

At this time no officers or staff members at the prison are subject to this illness.

The Tucker Unit's occupancy is at 849 prisoners.

The prison expects visitation to be open again next weekend at the maximum-security unit.
