I-30 Accident Forces Seven-Mile Traffic Jam

Wintry weather is causing traffic accidents, flight cancellations and power outages across Arkansas.

Arkansas State Police spokesman Bill Sadler says multiple weather-related crashes slowed traffic on Interstate 30 and more than two-dozen crashes had been reported on highways in central Arkansas Sunday. There were no immediate reports of fatalities.

Among the worst reported traffic backups was along I-3o westbound around the Saline and Hot Spring County lines. Traffic was backed-up an estimated seven miles between Malvern and Benton starting early Sunday afternoon, and continued nearly eight hours later. The backup was caused by a multi-vehicle accident brought on by slick conditions.

Authorities said Sunday evening that many drivers were hungry, in need of a bathroom and in danger of running out of gas.

State police say other trouble spots include several stretches of I-30 heading south towards Texarkana.
