JONESBORO, Ark. (AP) - The Jonesboro City Council has approved buying tasers and body cameras for some of its police officers.
KAIT-TV reports (http://bit.ly/1CpxdrP ) the purchase with a $12,000 grant was approved Tuesday night. The funding for the equipment is from the Department of Justice.
Mayor Harold Perrin says 10 of the city's approximately 125 officers will wear a camera. He says he ultimately wants to outfit all the officers to increase the safety of police and residents.
The grant will also fund 18 tasers for police.
Calls have increased for more police officers to wear such cameras since the fatal police shooting in Ferguson, Missouri, of an unarmed 18-year-old.
