UPDATE: Official accuses UA officials of destroying docs

      By ANDREW DeMILLOAssociated Press

LITTLE ROCK (AP) - The outgoing chief spokesman of the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville is accusing school officials of intentionally destroying financial records about a fundraising unit that was cited by legislative auditors for poor management.

John Diamond told a legislative panel on Friday that Chancellor David Gearhart ordered the destruction of documents related to the Fayetteville school's Advancement Division. Gearhart denied Diamond's claims and said they were coming from a disgruntled, soon-to-be-former employee.

Diamond made the claims as the panel reviewed an audit released this week that said the division ended the 2012 fiscal year with a $4.19 million deficit. The audit said the division increased spending 67% in a 4-year period without an accompanying increase in revenue.
