Little light shed on crash that killed law officer

LAVACA, Ark. (AP) - An Arkansas State Police report sheds little light on a single-vehicle crash that killed a Sebastian County sheriff's corporal.

The sheriff's office says 48-year-old Cpl. Terry Johnson of Barling died Saturday of injuries suffered in the crash on state Highway 96 in Lavaca. Authorities say Johnson was on routine patrol at the time.

The state police report says only that the vehicle driven by Johnson went off the highway and hit a guardrail - then overturned into a ditch and struck a utility pole.

Sheriff's Investigator Philip Pevehouse says the collision was reported by a resident who said he heard a loud crash and saw the sport utility vehicle on its side, off the roadway.

Pevehouse says the body has been sent to the state Crime Lab for an autopsy.
