It's Little Rock Mayor Mark Stodola's expanded pet project. Known as the Starfish Initiative, this year every third grader will receive more attention for reading. Right now, 75 freshman from UALR have volunteered to go into the schools and help teach kids to read.
Third grade is a critical year as kids transition from learning how to read to learning from what they read. One in six third graders who can't read, won't graduate high school. That number doubles to 33 percent when you're talking about minorities below the poverty line. In Little Rock 75 percent of kids are below that line.
