FAYETTEVILLE --The University of Arkansas Athletics Department gave Athletic Director Jeff Long a $100,000 per year raise in exchange for removing himself from consideration from positions at other schools, according to a document obtained by 40/29 News.
Early Sunday morning, the Dallas Morning News and NBC Sports reported Long was in the running for a spot as athletic director at the University of Texas. Sunday night, Long sent a message on Twitter saying he planned to stay at Arkansas.
A letter dated November 1, 2013 to Long from Chancellor G. David Gearhart reads, in part,
"I am very appreciative of your outstanding leadership of the Athletics Department and the positive attention you have garnered for the University of Arkansas. President Donald Bobbitt and I are also aware that another institution of higher education with significant resources has expressed its desire to retain your services for its athletic department at a higher compensation level than you are currently receiving at the University."
The letter details the new terms of Long's contract. It includes a one-time payment of $100,000 for later in November, and a salary increase of $100,000 per year beginning in 2014.
