LR Zoo announces death of giraffe Jigsaw

LITTLE ROCK (AP) - Little Rock Zoo officials say a giraffe named Jigsaw died after a weekend fight with another giraffe.

Zoo officials said Monday that Jigsaw was found on the ground with his dead down after an altercation with a giraffe named Mesi. His body was taken to the state Livestock and Poultry Commission for a necropsy.

Jigsaw was 13 years old and had lived its entire life at the Little Rock Zoo.

The zoo says Mesi was able to open a gate separating the animals Saturday night or Sunday morning and that the two animals sparred until Jigsaw fell.

Mesi did not suffer any major injuries. The zoo said it was talking to the Species Survival Plan about what action to take in its giraffe program. Mesi will remain at the zoo.
