LITTLE ROCK (KATV) - Waking up to your tablet or smart phone can significantly reduce your daily stress, according to researchers with Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute out of New York.
The key is apparently in the blue light that displays from the electronic devices like iPads. If you're able to read from a tablet within the first 45 minutes after you wake up, researchers say that light will boost your cortisol levels in a way that can reduce stress levels during the day.
Participants who woke up and read tablets or smart phones in the study had twice the amount of the stress hormone cortisol than those who did not.
An early morning boost of the hormone can reset the body's circadian rhythm, which adjusts your body to the stresses of daily life, according to the study's lead author.
Too much cortisol during the day, however, can lead to health problems. They advise against reading too much on an iPad at night, if the brightness is too high.
Morning tablet reading next to a window is also encouraged for optimal results.
