One thing that is probably not on your mind with this December blast of cold air: outdoor swimming pools.
But if you had paid a man over $1,000 to fix your pool back in the heat of the summer and the job still wasn't done..that might stay on your mind regardless of the temperature.
To be honest, Carolyn Smith's pool doesn't get used as much as it used to.
But this summerit didn't get used at all.
The problem with the pool was a rather simple onemore aesthetic than anything.
There were wrinkles on the bottom that needed to be smoothed out.
Smith hired Steven Martin with Martin Service Company out of Jacksonville.
Martin used a vacuum to get rid of the wrinkles but created a bigger problem in the process.
"It tore," says Smith about her pool's lining. "And he told me don't worry about it. I've got a patch. I'll come back and patch it. In about three weeks he came back and finally told meI'm not going to be able to patch it."
Martin offered Smith a deal: buy an $1,140.00 liner from him and he would install it for free.
He also offered to take her pool pumpwhich he said was making a noiseand fix it for free.
That was July 2nd.
Steven Martin hasn't been back.
"Every time I would call he would have one excuse after another," says Smith. "And so finally I realized that it wasn't going to happen. He wasn't going to come."
Smith has hired another pool company to fix the damage done by Martin.
She doubts she can get her money back. But she can warn others.
"He just thought he would take my money and be gone," says Smith. "And I just don't want that to happen to anybody else."
So where is Steven Martin?
Ms. Smith doesn't knowand we don't either. His voicemail box is full and he so far isn't returning calls to the number we left for him.
