Maumelle High School lock down lifted, student with gun charged

Maumelle police have formally charged a Maumelle High School senior with carrying a weapon on campus, which{}caused the school to be placed on lockdown.

Authorities say 18-year-old James Zantrese Austin was taken into custody and charged with{}the class D felony.

The school went under lockdown around 11:15 a.m. Tuesday{}after someone saw a student with a gun, according to Pulaski County Special School District spokesperson Deb Roush.

Maumelle police responded within seconds, according to Roush.A small caliber pistol{}was found in a classroom and Austin was taken into custody. The lockdown was lifted after noon.{}
