LITTLE ROCK (KATV) - There is no better way to bring attention to an issue than when you are speaking from personal experience.
About 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys are sexually abused by the age of 18. Miss Southeast Arkansas 2013, Britteny Humphrey, became a part of that statistic when she was just eight years old after she was abused by her third grade teacher.
But Humphrey hopes to use her own personal tragedy to make a difference and prevent it from happening to other children as she runs for Miss Arkansas. She says the purpose of today's rally is encourage children to speak up and remind parents to pay attention.
"It's a tragic incident that happened but I have overcome it," said Humphrey. "This is happening every single day and to raise awareness and to let people know that we can prevent it from happening,"
Humphrey's mother also joined her with her own message to parents. Tonight at ten hear what key signs she says you should look our for with your child that she missed.
