LITTLE ROCK (AP) - The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission says hunters have harvested more than 175,000 deer thus far and a total number of more than 200,000 is expected to be taken before season's end.
A record 213,487 deer were checked by Arkansas hunters last year, the first time the number had surpassed 200,000.
Modern gun season remains open in southern Arkansas and a three-day holiday hunting period is still to come.
Wildlife biologists say deer is abundant in the state with an estimated herd of 1 million or more.
Officials say 45 percent of the deer harvest this year has been does and the remainder either adult bucks or button bucks.Copyright 2013 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.
