VAN BUREN, Ark. (AP) - A new trial has been set for a man convicted in the 2001 slaying of a woman at a Crawford County transient camp.
The Southwest Times Record reports (http://bit.ly/X6VeUv ) the new trial for 56-year-old Rickey Dale Newman has been set for Oct. 27 in Crawford County Circuit Court.
Newman was sentenced to death in 2002 for killing 46-year-old Marie Cholette.
Newman wrote a letter last month that says he didn't kill Cholette. The letter was filed to the circuit clerk's office last Thursday.
The Arkansas Supreme Court ordered a new trial for Newman earlier this year. Justices found that Newman had "cognitive defects and mental illnesses" that interfered with his ability to assist his defense attorneys at trial.
